German VDP Wines in London

The VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter) represents Germany's most prestigious wine estates. Using the ELID identifier system to match wine list entries to producers, we ask: which of those estates appear on London restaurant wine lists, and how widely?

Wine list data covers 205 central London restaurants, sourced from wine lists updated within the last four months (since Jan 2026). 101 of those carry at least one VDP wine.

Weingut Egon Müller - Scharzhof, Maximin Grünhaus, and Joh. Jos. Prüm lead distribution, appearing on 32, 30, and 22 restaurant lists respectively.

65% of VDP estates have zero presence in central London restaurants. Among those that do appear, producer distribution is highly unequal (Gini: 0.54^†), with a handful of names commanding the market while most are clinging on by a single placement. London's VDP presence is, in practice, almost entirely Riesling; other categories barely register. Mosel dominates to the same degree across regions.

^† The Gini coefficient measures inequality of producer distribution on a scale of 0 (perfectly equal) to 1 (entirely concentrated). A score of 0.54 is high, comparable to household income inequality in the world's most unequal economies.
